Diversity Team

The Diversity Team at the Health Department was started in recognition of the many differences shared by our employees and our community. Our mission is based on the Webster’s Dictionary definition, “differences and variety” which includes an endless array of things such as age, gender, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Our goal is to celebrate and value diversity in our workplace on a daily basis, as well as promote inclusiveness in the overall culture of the MCHD workplace.

Based on ideas generated by an employee survey, the Diversity Team developed a program mission, goal and six objectives:
  • Raise awareness that diversity is important
  • Identify current challenges and prejudices
  • Promote positive interpersonal verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Increase flow of information about diversity issues
  • Encourage recruitment of minorities
  • Improve service to our community

The Diversity Team is made up of Health Department employees who are appointed to serve 12 month terms. Employees may volunteer for an appointment or be named by a supervisor or co-worker. Each Division in the Health Department is represented on the Diversity Team. Team members are given time at each staff meeting to provide updates and activities of the Diversity Team; and to take suggestions, information and requests back to the Team.

ALL employees are WELCOME to attend the meetings, however not all will be designated team members.

Activities that have resulted from our Diversity Program include:
  • Quarterly Diversity Celebrations
  • Culturally Themed Employee Potlucks
  • Bulletin Board Displays
  • Increased Outreach to Diverse Populations in our Community
  • Input on Policy/Procedural Improvements
  • Development of an Employee Morale Group (The Happy Booster Club)
  • Professional Development/Trainings
  • Collaborative Community Events
