Caregiver Advisory Services are provided to informal caregivers of adults who are age 60 or older and to grandparents or other relatives who are 60 or older and caring for children under the age of 18. The purpose of the program is to inform caregivers of available services, to assist caregivers in accessing services, to provide emotional support through individual counseling and support groups, and to provide training and education to assist caregivers in making decisions and solving problems relating to their caregiving roles. The Caregiver Advisor facilitates a Caregiver Support Group at the Macon County Health Department on the 4th Tuesday of every month from 10:30-11:30 AM. A respite room is available during support group meetings with advance notice. The Caregiver Advisor co-teaches Taking Care of You: Powerful Tools for Caregiving at least twice yearly. The six week program is designed to provide caregivers with “tools” to care for themselves so they can better care for loved ones. The Caregiver Advisor publishes a monthly newsletter for caregivers and grandparents raising grandchildren. The newsletter includes notices of community activities and other support group meetings, educational topics, Medicare up-dates, and items for fun, inspiration, and diversion. The
Caregiver Advisor maintains a reference library of materials that can be
borrowed by caregivers. Topics include Alzheimer’s/Dementia, diabetes,
cardiovascular health, mental health issues, medications, home safety, in-home
care, sensory deficits, among others. Spanish language materials are also
available.
